In answer to years of requests, recent mine catastrophes, perpetual environmental problems, and the glaring defects in B.C. mining legislation and policy – some of it unchanged since the 1800s – our five-member coalition came together to pose a suite of legal reforms.

Fair Mining Collaborative; the University of Victoria Environmental Law Centre; Mining Watch Canada; Northern Confluence; and First Nation Women Advocating Responsible Mining are calling for legal reforms that will (among other things):
A. Protect our communities and watersheds from mining waste;
B. Implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples,
C. Reform the “free entry” mineral tenure system; and
D. Create assurance that “polluters pay” through full bonding and security for mines.

In support of the coalition’s work, Fair Mining Collaborative is presenting a two-hour public forum.
