Last fall Bonny came up with the idea for a Fish Farm Medicine Revival Roadshow, based loosely on memories of (Bob) Bossin’s Home Remedy for Nuclear War. Like Bob, we believe that fish farming will only be stopped through the activism of ordinary citizens, and felt it was important to get our message out into Island communities.
The Medicine Roadshow was originally conceived as a vehicle to deliver our new 40-minute documentary, Salmon Secrets. But we knew that facts alone wouldn’t get people active—we needed music to build the energy. And we knew the perfect musician—the amazing Luke Wallace! Always a keen protector of the coast, Luke agreed at the drop of a hat to join the tour.
We were joined by Indigenous speakers from the front lines of fish farm resistance: Gisele Martin, Skookum John and Ernest Alfred. And of course Alexandra Morton!
In the end, we were able to tour Victoria, Duncan, Nanaimo and Courtenay. Sadly we had to cancel the Quadra show due to weather. The energy was charged—it was a lot of fun to gather with like-minded folks, to sing together, and to vow to keep taking action until the last fish farm leaves BC waters!
With all fish farm licences in BC expiring on June 30th, Fisheries Minister Diane Lebouthillier is backsliding on the Promise—she is now considering 6 year licences for open net-pens!
This spring is the time to make sure the Minister knows: keep the promise to remove fish farms from BC waters by 2025. You can add your voice here and check our our Action Tool Kit.
